As a principal Agricultural Research Officer and a rice breeder working under Ministry of Agriculture. Sophia worked as the head of Dakawa Research Institute for two years ( 2015-2017). The institute has a research mandate for three main crops (rice, maize and vegetables). She has worked also as head of crop improvement departiment for 2 years (2015-16) at Dakawa Research Institute and for 4 years (2012-2015) at Agriculture Research Institute ARI– KATRIN. ARI – KATRIN has a country mandate for rice research and it is a Regional Rice Centre of Excellence for Eastern Africa Agriculture Productivity Programme (EAAPP) – ASARECA countries (Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia).Currently, sophia has been appointed to be the acting Chief Executive Officer for Tanzania Agriculture Seed Agency since December 2017 to date. The agency’s mandate is to 1) Expand seed production and distribution so as to facilitate seed accessibility by farmers, 2) Promote increase private sector participation in the seed industry development through establishment of private public partnership of joint venture in seed production and distribution. 3) Promote increase demand of certified seed by farmers, and 4) Strengthening research capacities for breeding and producing varieties that address farmer’s specific demand. Sophia is interested in developing partnership in areas of seed multiplication, tecnology promotion and distribution, crop improvement focusing tolerance to abiotic stresses, agronomy, management of problem soils.
